Abstract

This research is motivated by the importance of critical thinking skills in the 21st century, especially in Biology learning on Biotechnology material which requires students to be able to analyze problems and make accountable decisions. Critical thinking is the ability to analyze problems, make decisions, and evaluate relevant information in order to obtain accountable conclusions. Based on observations at SMAN 1 Payakumbuh, learning has been directed at improving critical thinking skills, but not optimally. This study aims to analyze the level of critical thinking skills of class XII students of SMAN 1 Payakumbuh on Biotechnology material. The method used is descriptive research with a simple random sampling technique to take a sample of 40 students. The research instrument is in the form of critical thinking skills essay questions that have been validated and reliable, and analyzed using a quantitative descriptive approach. The results of the study showed that the average level of critical thinking skills of students was in the low category with a score of 50.59%, with details of most students being in the low to very low category in almost all aspects of critical thinking skills Ennis (2011), such as providing simple explanations, making conclusions, to setting strategies and tactics.
